Did you know that dental sealants are highly effective cavity fighters that can protect the teeth from decay and are effective for young and old alike? Yes, it’s true! Dental sealants have been proven to be entirely safe for kids 6 years old and up.
The most effective time to get dental sealants is around the age of 6 when their molars have erupted and are fully grown in. The dentist coats and seals the pits and grooves of the molars with a plastic substance that hardens into a thin, but tough, shield for the teeth. It acts like a raincoat or umbrella, shedding away food particles and frustrating decay from taking hold in the cracks and crevices of the tooth. The protective covering can last over a decade as long as the recipient is getting regular checkups by his or her dentist to assess the efficacy of the sealant.
Even though the majority of dental sealants are given to the young, there is no age restriction on getting them. Adults may have them applied to any tooth that is not already showing signs of decay. The only stipulation we have about dental sealants is that they should only be used upon molars and premolars that are fully emerged.
Studies done by the American Dental Association and American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry have proven the benefits of dental sealants. Those patients given dental sealants were 80 percent more likely to be free from cavities than those persons that did not have dental sealants.
